Apple has confirmed a new event for October 13, and its message is simple: “Welcome home.” The company has not revealed which products it plans to announce, but all signs point to a major push into the smart home market.
The announcement follows several leaks about new Apple home devices. The expected lineup includes a new smart display, the
HomePod mini 2 and an updated
Apple TV 4K. Apple has yet to confirm any of these products, so we will have to wait until next week to see what actually arrives.
Apple’s new smart display could steal the show
The most interesting product could be Apple's long-rumored HomePad, also known as the Home Hub. It is expected to feature a square 6-inch display that lets users control smart home devices, make video calls and check useful information around the house.
Reports suggest Apple is preparing two versions. One could sit on a desk or kitchen counter, while the other could be mounted on a wall. The desktop version is rumored to have a built-in speaker in its base, with a metal arm holding up the screen.
This could be Apple's answer to smart displays from Google and Amazon. However, Apple may have an advantage if it can combine the device with its existing ecosystem and the newer AI features coming to Siri.
HomePod mini 2 and Apple TV 4K are overdue
Apple could also finally update two products that have been waiting for new hardware for years.
The original HomePod mini arrived in 2020, so a successor is long overdue. The HomePod mini 2 is rumored to bring a faster chip, improved wireless connectivity and support for Apple's new
Siri AI features.
The Apple TV 4K is also expected to get an update. The current model launched in 2022, and a new version could bring a faster processor and better support for Apple's growing AI features.
I think the smart display is the product to watch here. A new speaker or streaming box would be welcome, but a dedicated home hub could give Apple a much stronger position in a market where Google and Amazon have been active for years.
The big question is Siri
Apple's new devices are expected to rely heavily on Siri and its AI features. This could help the company connect smart home controls, personal information and everyday tasks in one place.
Still, Apple has not confirmed the hardware or its features. We will know more on October 13, when the company is expected to reveal what its “Welcome home” message really means.
