OnePlus has officially revealed the new display coming to the OnePlus 16. Developed with BOE, the fourth-generation Oriental Screen brings a 165Hz refresh rate for everyday use and up to 185Hz in supported games. The company is also promising better motion clarity, improved colors and lower power use.
The new screen uses custom X4 light-emitting material. OnePlus and BOE have also upgraded their display production process, with each sub-pixel going through three rounds of calibration. The goal is to make colors more accurate and keep the image consistent across the panel.

165Hz for everyday use, 185Hz for gaming

The biggest change is how the refresh rate works. The OnePlus 16 can run at 165Hz across the system, so scrolling, menus and animations can all feel smoother. In supported games, the screen can reach 185Hz.
That is a useful step up from the 165Hz display on the OnePlus 15. Still, the real benefit will depend on the apps and games that support these high frame rates. Most users will not see a major difference in every task, but gamers could notice smoother motion and faster response.
OnePlus also says the new panel can use about the same power at 165Hz as the previous generation did at 120Hz. If that holds up in real use, it could help the phone balance smooth visuals with battery life.

Better motion and lower brightness

The screen also includes OnePlus’ custom P4 display chip and Ultra-Dynamic Clarity Technology. These are designed to keep fast-moving images sharper, which matters most in games with quick action.
Another useful feature is hardware-level brightness down to just 1 nit. This should make the screen more comfortable to use in a dark room, where even a normal minimum brightness can feel too strong.
The panel also has eye-care features and very slim, symmetrical bezels measuring just 1.15mm on all four sides. That should give the phone a clean look without a thick border around the screen.

The OnePlus 16 launches soon

The OnePlus 16 will be the first phone to use the new BOE X4 Oriental Screen. The company has also confirmed the phone's China launch for October 12.
I like that OnePlus is working on more than just a higher refresh rate. Better motion clarity and lower power use could matter more in daily use than the 185Hz number alone. The big question is whether these improvements will be easy to notice outside a few supported games.
