The
OnePlus 16 could be one of the first phones to push its display refresh rate to 165Hz across the whole system.
A new leak claims users will be able to turn the mode on from the phone's settings.Unlike some phones, the feature would not be limited to just a few system apps. The leak says the 165Hz option can also work with downloaded apps. The main desktop interface would run at 165Hz too.
165Hz will make the phone feel smoother
A higher refresh rate mainly makes movement on the screen look smoother. You can notice it when scrolling through a website, Doomscrolling on tik tok, moving around menus or swiping between home screens.
The
OnePlus 16 could also help in games that support high frame rates. Still, 165Hz does not mean every game or app will run at 165 frames per second. The software needs to support it, and the phone has to be able to keep up.
The leaked software includes a switch for the feature in the system settings. That should make it easy to turn 165Hz on when you want the smoothest experience, or turn it off to save some battery.
ColorOS 17 is part of the upgrade
The
OnePlus 16 is expected to run
ColorOS 17 in China. The new 165Hz option is reportedly built into the system rather than being limited to a special app or game mode.
The desktop will also stay at 165Hz when the feature is enabled. So basic things like opening apps, scrolling through settings and moving between screens should use the higher refresh rate as well.
There are still plenty of details we don't know. The display size, resolution and brightness have not been revealed, and OnePlus has not officially announced the phone yet. But if OnePlus really lets users use it across the whole system, it could be a nice upgrade for people who care about smooth scrolling and high-frame-rate gaming.
