Google has started adding native support for Markdown files (.md) to
Google Docs and Drive.
The company announced the change on its Workspace Updates blog. Users can now open, edit and comment on .md files directly in Google Docs without converting them to another format. Drive also shows them as a rendered preview with links and tables.
9to5Google connects the change to the growing use of Markdown in the age of AI. Markdown is a simple markup language that uses text symbols to create headings, lists, links and tables. Developers, documentation writers and AI models often use it to store structured content. Google has supported Markdown in the past, but users had to import and convert the files first. This could change the formatting, remove comments and split the document into multiple files.
What's changing in Google Docs and Drive?
Google Docs can now open .md files without changing their file type. Users can work on them together in real time, and comments are also supported. There is no need to write Markdown syntax by hand, which could be useful for people who are not familiar with code.
Drive shows the file as a rendered preview, so users can see links and tables without opening an editor. Any changes still need to be made in Google Docs, rather than directly in Drive.
Google also says AI agents can work on these documents in the same way. 9to5Google points out that the feature could also make it easier to sync files with NotebookLM. Google executive Chandu Thota described Markdown as a shared language between people and AI agents.
When will the feature arrive?
Google started rolling out the feature on October 5. The process can take up to 15 days. It will be available to Google Workspace customers as well as people using personal Google accounts.
There is no setting that users or administrators need to enable. The feature will turn on automatically, and nothing needs to be installed.
Google has not mentioned an extra charge for the feature. However, administrators also cannot turn it off, which could be an issue for organizations with strict rules around document management.
Who will find Markdown support useful?
The biggest benefit will likely go to people who often receive content from AI tools in Markdown format. For most regular Google Docs users, it is a smaller but useful convenience.
Google has been adding Markdown support to Docs for several years, with the first steps dating back to 2022. It is still unclear how well Docs will handle more complex Markdown features, such as code blocks or nested tables.
Users who still don't have the feature will need to wait for the rollout to finish. Once it arrives, they can try opening a .md file in Google Docs again.
