vivo has launched the V80 in India, and it brings a surprisingly large battery for a phone with a fairly compact 6.59-inch display. The new model also has a 144Hz AMOLED panel, a Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 chip and a ZEISS camera system.
The V80 starts at INR 62,999, which is around $700. The 8GB/256GB model costs INR 69,999, or about $780, while the 8GB/512GB version costs INR 79,999, around $890. These are Indian prices before any local taxes or market adjustments.

A compact 144Hz AMOLED display

The V80 has a 6.59-inch AMOLED display with a 2,750 x 1,260 resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate. It can reach up to 5,000 nits of local peak brightness, while the panel can drop to just 1 nit for more comfortable night reading.
The display also supports HDR, HDR10+ and HLG. vivo has kept the bezels very thin at around 1.25mm, which helps the phone look more premium.
For me, the size is one of the more interesting parts. Many current phones are getting larger, so a 6.59-inch screen combined with a big battery feels like a sensible balance.

ZEISS cameras with a telephoto

The V80 has three ZEISS cameras on the back. The main camera uses a 50MP Sony LYTIA 700V sensor with OIS and autofocus. It is joined by a 50MP Sony IMX882 telephoto camera with OIS and 3x optical zoom, plus an 8MP ultra-wide camera.
There is also a 50MP autofocus selfie camera with a 92-degree field of view. Both the main and selfie cameras can record 4K video at up to 60fps.
vivo is also pushing its 4K Cinematic Video mode, which is clearly aimed at users who want more than basic smartphone video.

A huge 7,200mAh battery

The V80 packs a 7,200mAh silicon-carbon battery, which is a big jump over the 6,500mAh battery in the previous V70.
Charging remains at 90W, so vivo has increased capacity without slowing down charging. The phone also supports bypass charging, which can be useful during long gaming sessions.
This is probably the upgrade I like most. A 7,200mAh battery should give the V80 plenty of endurance without turning it into a huge phone.

Android 17 and OriginOS 7

The V80 runs OriginOS 7 based on Android 17 out of the box. It is also one of the first vivo phones outside China to ship with the new software.
The phone comes with four Android upgrades and six years of security updates. vivo says security updates will arrive monthly during the first two years, then move to a slower schedule later in the support period.
The V80 also has an in-display fingerprint scanner, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC and eSIM support.

Price and availability

The vivo V80 comes in Horizon Blue, Stellar Black and Sunrise Anthem. It measures 7.79mm thick and weighs 210g.
Prices start at $700 in India, with the 256GB model at about $780 and the 512GB version at about $890. The V80 is an interesting mix of a relatively compact design, a huge battery and a serious camera setup. The Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 is not new, but the rest of the package looks much more ambitious.
For me, the 7,200mAh battery and 50MP telephoto are the two features that make the V80 stand out from a lot of mid-range phones.
