Apple unveiled today the updated
MacBook Pro and Vision Pro, both of which have the new
Apple M5 chip inside. The new Apple M5 continues the company's legacy with its in-house developed silicon. The new ARM-based CPU delivers over 4 times more GPU compute performance for AI compared to its predecessor, the
M4. It has a Neural Accelerator in each of its GPU cores.
Apple M5 Brings Great Performance Improvements Over M4
The
new CPU is built using the 3rd-gen 3nm technology, and its CPU apparently features "the world's fastest performance core". The CPU has up to 10 cores. There are four performance cores and six efficiency cores. Together, they bring up to 15% better performance in multi-threading when compared to the M4.
The Apple M5 brings almost 30% more memory speed, now reaching 153 GB/s. It can use up to 32 GB of RAM and offers 45% better graphics than the M4. Apple says every part of the chip is made for AI. This means devices with the M5 can handle AI tasks much faster. They can run image tools like Draw Things or large language models on webAI with better speed and power.
Improvements in GPU Bring Better Ray-Tracing and Graphics
The M5 also has a new ray tracing engine. It provides up to a 45% boost. Combined with "rearchitected second-generation dynamic caching". The GPU will also provide "smoother gameplay, with better visuals in 3D apps. The faster rendering times will also benefit complex graphics projects".
It’s worth noting that the Apple M5 is only the start. Apple will likely release more versions later, each one stronger than the last. All of them will bring better AI power, keeping that as their main focus. Apple is doing great with its own chips, and the future looks bright for this part of its business.
