Today is a very important day for Apple, as the iPad celebrates its 10th anniversary. This was the last "big" product to be presented by the legendary Steve Jobs, who claimed to be a "magical and revolutionary" device. Although it was received by many as a "useless giant iPhone", unable to make calls, the truth is that it started a new market segment.
Its great success from day one has led Android smartphone makers to enter this segment as well. They brought to the market many products that have given users fantastic productivity and entertainment tools. I recall that on the first day of sales, Apple sold more than 300,000 iPads.
Evolution of the Apple iPad over the past decade
- March 2010: the first iPad hits the market with a 9.7" inch screen and a weight of only 680g.
- March 2011: iPad 2, 33% thinner, front, rear camera and white color.
- October 2012: A new iPad arrives with the new Apple A6X processor and lightning port. Presentation of the iPad Mini.
- October 2013: iPad Air launched, 20% thinner and 28% lighter, with slimmer margins and the 64-bit Apple A7 processor.
- October 2014: iPad Air 2 arrives with Touch ID implementation and an impressive Retina Display panel.
- September 2015: the first iPad Pro with a 12.9" Retina Display. With Apple Pencil, four speakers and support for the popular Smart Keyboard.
- March 2017: Fifth-generation iPad with a reduced price and Retina Display launched.
- June 2017: Arrival of the second-generation iPad Pro with 120Hz refresh rate, Apple A10X Fusion processor and lower margins.
- March 2018: sixth-generation iPad released with support for Apple Pencil and Apple A10 processor.
- October 2018: The third-generation iPad Pro arrives with an impressive design renewal, Face ID support, USB-C port, second-generation Apple Pencil and storage of up to 1TB.
- September 2019: the 7th generation of the iPad, with a 10.2" inch Retina Display and support for the Smart Keyboard with traditional dimensions.
