Gurman previously suggested that Apple was working on a thinner and lighter
MacBook Pro. He now says the new model should be noticeably lighter, while its thickness will not change by much.
Apple is reportedly redesigning some parts inside the
laptop and changing their layout. This could reduce the weight without requiring a much thinner body.
The exact weight is still unknown
Gurman has not shared a specific weight for the new MacBook Pro. The current 14-inch model weighs around 1.55 to 1.6kg, depending on the configuration. The 16-inch version weighs about 2.14kg.
For comparison, Samsung's 16-inch Galaxy Book6 Pro weighs around 1.59kg in some configurations. This shows that there is already competition offering large OLED laptops without making them especially heavy.
Without an exact figure from Apple or Gurman, however, it is hard to say how much lighter the new MacBook Pro will actually be.
A Tandem OLED display could be the biggest change
The new MacBook Pro is expected to be
Apple's first
Mac with a Tandem OLED display. This type of panel uses two OLED layers, which can help improve brightness and extend the display's lifespan.
OLED would also bring deeper blacks and higher contrast than the mini-LED screens used in current MacBook Pro models. The new laptop is also expected to be the first
touchscreen MacBook. Some reports have claimed that Apple could replace the current display notch with a Dynamic Island-style design. However, Apple has not confirmed the touchscreen, OLED panel or Dynamic Island.
Gurman's latest comment is a good reminder that plans can change before a product launches. Even reports from reliable Apple sources should therefore be treated as rumors until Apple confirms them.
The launch could come before the end of November
Gurman expects Apple to introduce the new MacBook Pro by the end of November. Other reports suggest it could arrive alongside the first OLED iPad mini.
Apple is also reportedly testing new Macs with macOS 27.2, which could offer a clue about the launch window. The laptops are expected to use M5 Pro and M5 Max chips.
The price remains unknown. Apple has not announced the new MacBook Pro or confirmed its launch date, so more details should emerge closer to the release.
