Meta Hires Dreamer AI Team, Hugo Barra Returns to Lead AI Agent Push

Meta just made another move in AI by bringing in the team behind a startup called Dreamer. Along with that, Hugo Barra is coming back to the company. For those unaware, Dreamer is a new AI startup focused on helping people create their own AI agents. Even though the company was only founded earlier this year, Meta moved quickly to bring its team on board.

Dreamer will now work under Meta’s Superintelligence Lab, led by Alexandr Wang. Their main focus will be building AI agents and related tools. Hugo Barra is part of the team joining Meta. He previously worked at the company, leading its virtual reality division before leaving in 2021. Before that, he held leadership roles at Xiaomi and Google. Now he’s returning, this time to work on AI.

Experienced people from the tech industry founded Dreamer. Co-founder David Singleton, for example, was CTO at Stripe and also worked on Android at Google. So this isn’t a small or inexperienced team. The exact details of the deal haven’t been made public, but reports say investors will make more than they originally put in. Even with the deal, Dreamer will remain a separate legal entity. Meta is getting access to its technology through a licensing agreement instead of fully absorbing it.

Singleton confirmed the move and said he had shown Dreamer’s work to Mark Zuckerberg earlier this year. According to him, both sides quickly realized they were aiming for the same thing: making it easier for people to build software using AI.

This move shows where Meta is heading. The company is putting more focus on AI, especially tools that let users create and control their own software. Bringing in a team like Dreamer gives Meta a head start in that space.
