Microsoft has finally revealed the price and release date of the Surface Laptop Ultra. This is not a normal Surface laptop. It is a high-end machine built for creators, developers and people who want to run serious AI workloads locally.
The Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,599.99 in the US and will begin shipping on October 16. The top model reaches $5,899.99, making it one of the most expensive Windows laptops you can buy.

A very different Surface Laptop

The laptop comes with a 15-inch Mini-LED PixelSense Ultra touchscreen with a 3:2 aspect ratio. It reaches up to 2,000 nits of peak HDR brightness, while Microsoft has also added a much larger haptic touchpad.
The design is surprisingly thin for this level of hardware. The laptop is under 18mm thick and weighs less than 4.5 pounds. It comes in Platinum and Nightfall.

RTX Spark does the heavy lifting

The big story is NVIDIA's new RTX Spark platform. It combines a Grace CPU with a Blackwell GPU and up to 6,144 GPU cores.
Microsoft offers up to 20 CPU cores and a huge 128GB of unified memory. The system can deliver up to one petaflop of AI performance and can run AI models with more than 120 billion parameters locally.
This is where the Surface Laptop Ultra becomes interesting. You can work with large AI models without sending everything to the cloud. For developers and creators, that could be a much bigger benefit than another small CPU speed boost.

Plenty of ports

Microsoft has also avoided the usual thin-laptop port problem. The Surface Laptop Ultra includes two additional USB-C ports, HDMI, USB-A, a full-size SD card reader and a 3.5mm headphone jack.
There is also a new magnetic USB-C charging connection called Magnetic Connect. The same port can handle power, data and video.

The price gets serious

The entry model costs $2,599.99 with 24GB of unified memory and 512GB of storage. The 24GB/1TB version costs $2,999.99, while the 32GB/1TB model is $3,299.99.
The top version jumps to $5,899.99 with 128GB of unified memory and 1TB of storage.
That price will keep the Surface Laptop Ultra away from most buyers. Still, I think Microsoft has built something genuinely different here. It is closer to a portable workstation than a regular Surface Laptop, and the ability to run large AI models locally is its biggest selling point.
