USB 4 Products At 40Gbps/100W Coming By The End Of 2020

The USB 4 interface based on Thunderbolt 3 technology has doubled the bandwidth compared to the previous USB 3.2. It can provide 40Gbps bandwidth and 100W power, using USB Type-C physical interface. So the USB4 can be considered as a popular version of Thunderbolt 3. The USB Promoter Group is currently working on the USB4 specification, and related retail products will be available by the end of 2020.

According to AnandTech, USB 4 has come to version 0.7 and the development progress is relatively fast. According to the USB Promoter Group, USB4 is based on the Thunderbolt 3 technology. But due to the current complexity of the development, they hope to simplify some of the functions while ensuring performance.

The USB 4 will provide 40Gbps (5GB/s) transfer rate and support 100W power supply. It supports HDMI 2.0 and Display 1.2 (DP 1.2) standards for video transmission. It can be connected to a 5K display or two 4K displays simultaneously. Thanks to the USB Type-C physical interface, the USB4 standard makes notebooks thinner and lighter and is backward compatible with products that have previously adopted the USB Type-C standard. Considering the current mainstream USB standards, USB Type-C physics can be used. There is no need to worry about compatibility, but some users may need to purchase additional peripheral products or docking stations that use USB Type-C specifications.

As the maker of the USB standard, USB-IF is optimistic about the development of USB 4. It believes that some specifications can be completed this summer. So the related equipment capable of mass production will be launched by the end of 2020. Say, Intel not only provides USB4 related technologies but also actively promotes the development of related products.
