According to the ETNews, Samsung Display began the mass production of OLEDoS panels, and will be a second supplier for the Samsung Galaxy XR. The device currently uses two micro-OLED displays built by Sony with the so-called "OLED on Silicon" (OLEDoS) tech. Now, Korea is raising its efforts, pushing its own division to produce this tech.

Samsung's Entrance in This Segment Can Reduce Prices in the Near Future

This generation of OLEDoS creates white OLEDs on a silicon wafer and uses color filters for RGB colors. The ones in the Galaxy XR are 1.3" in size and have 3,552 x 3,840 pixels in resolutions. There is one panel for each eye basically.

Sony also supplies OLEDoS panels for the Apple Vision Pro, another competitor in the field of "Extended Reality" headsets. Apple already has an interest in using Samsung's OLED panels as a cost-saving move. These reports fall in line with the brand's old intent on launching a cheaper Vision headset. This particular variant has been canceled, but Apple may still use Samsung's tech on a future iteration.
In fact, seeing Samsung investing in this area is a good sign. More competition will lower the prices. As per a report from Omdia, small 0.49" OLEDoS panels cost $24 in 2024 and were expected to drop to $20 this year and to $17 next year. Moreover, Omdia's research states that OLEDoS maker is still a fraction of the market for regular OLED displays. If growing competition reduces prices, such displays will see wider adoption.
Quick highlights summary:
  • Samsung starts mass production of OLEDoS panels
  • Current XR panels are 1.3 inches with 3552 x 3840 resolution
  • Sony also supplies OLEDoS for Apple Vision Pro
  • Apple may shift to Samsung panels for cost savings
  • Omdia says OLEDoS prices keep falling
  • DJI Goggles 2 and future Meta Quest models use OLEDoS
  • Samsung recently showcased RGB OLEDoS prototypes without color filters
  • Smaller 0.62-inch panels were also demonstrated

Various Brands Can Benefit From The Expanded OLEDoS Offer

Interestingly, the DJI Goggles 2, which are used for FPV flights with DJI drones, also use OLEDoS panels, but they are 1080p instead of 4K class. Meta is reportedly looking to adopt OLEDoS for a 2026 Quest release.

Samsung already demoed many 1.3-inch OLEDoS panels with RGB. This removes the need for a color filter and further improves this tech. The company also showcased smaller 0.62-inch OLEDoS panels, both with white-only and RGB.
