Sony is returning to the world of turntables after a long
break. Seven long years have gone by since its last major update was rolled out
in the market. What is new right now is that the company has
rolled out two new
products in this category. They're called the PS-LX3BT and the PS-LX5BT.
They’re
Sony’s first new turntables since 2019, but the message is clear: vinyl
still has a place in the current world.
Made for Easy Listening
Both turntables are built with simplicity in mind. They
look clean and modern. More importantly, they are easy to use. There is a
button for starting the music, and the tone arm goes up, down, and back on its
own once the music stops. There is no confusion. This makes vinyl feel less
intimidating, especially for new listeners.
Old Records, New Tech
While the goal is analogue sound, the experience is modern.
They both come with a wired connection capability, but the wireless audio is a
major focus. They are also able to come with the capability to stream music
wirelessly through the Bluetooth connection that supports high-resolution audio
as defined by the aptX Adaptive technology.
Each turntable also includes a built-in equaliser. This
allows users to switch between analogue and digital output. There is also a USB
port. With it, records can be turned into digital files. Old albums can be
saved, shared, or played anywhere.
Where the Two Models Differ
The PS-LX3BT is the more affordable option. It uses a
moving magnet cartridge with a stylus pressure of 3.5 grams. It is reliable and
beginner-friendly. The PS-LX5BT takes things further. It lowers the stylus
pressure to 2 grams, which improves accuracy and treats records more gently.
Sony also upgrades the hardware on the LX5BT. It has a
removable RCA cable, a lighter platter, and anti-slip pads to keep records
steady. Better internal parts help reduce noise and distortion. The goal is
clearer sound and better control.
A Quiet Shift for Sony
These turntables arrive during a major change at
Sony. A
new joint venture with
TCL will take over Sony’s TV and home audio business.
TCL will hold the majority stake. Because of this, these turntables may be
among the last made under Sony’s home entertainment brand. If you want to buy
the PS-LX3BT, it is now on the shelves, for pre-order of course. The price of
this device is $399.99 and shipment will start in February. For the PS-LX5BT,
it will hit the market in April and the price is $499.99.
