Digital Chat Station dropped a detailed leak on the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max camera system this week, and the headline spec is one that should interest anyone following mobile imaging seriously. The device is being tested with LOFIC HDR 3.0 — the third generation of Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor sensor technology — paired with a 200MP primary sensor and a matching 200MP periscope telephoto.

This is an engineering prototype. Final specs can change. But the direction is clear.

Key Points

  • Xiaomi 18 Pro Max prototype tested with 200MP primary sensor at 1/1.28-inch size on a 22nm process, paired with LOFIC HDR 3.0 for improved dynamic range
  • Dual 200MP setup confirmed — periscope telephoto also uses a 200MP sensor with support for 15cm macro photography
  • LOFIC HDR 3.0 specifically addresses highlight clipping and shadow preservation in high-contrast scenes
  • Xiaomi 18 Ultra may depart from the traditional 1-inch sensor approach entirely — LOFIC-based architecture being explored instead
  • Xiaomi's president Liu Weibing has publicly described LOFIC as the future direction of mobile imaging — September 2026 launch expected for standard and Pro models

What LOFIC HDR 3.0 Actually Does

LOFIC — Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor — is a sensor architecture that handles excess light at the pixel level rather than letting it spill into adjacent pixels and cause overexposure. In practical terms, it preserves highlight detail in bright areas while simultaneously capturing shadow information — the exact scenario that trips up conventional smartphone sensors in backlit conditions, sunsets, and mixed indoor-outdoor compositions.

HDR 3.0 is the third iteration of this approach. Each generation has expanded the dynamic range ceiling. Xiaomi's president explicitly described LOFIC at a previous press event as the future evolution direction of mobile imaging — that's not incidental language from a company that is clearly building its next flagship strategy around it.

Dual 200MP — Both Sensors This Time

The 200MP primary sensor running a 1/1.28-inch size is already a strong spec. What's more unusual is the periscope telephoto matching it at 200MP. Most flagships pair a high-resolution primary with lower-resolution supporting lenses. Testing equal resolution across both primary and zoom positions suggests Xiaomi wants consistent quality across focal lengths rather than a dramatic drop-off when you reach for zoom.
The 15cm minimum macro distance on the telephoto is a practical feature for close-up photography — product shots, nature detail, food — without requiring a separate macro lens.

The 18 Ultra Is Doing Something Different

Here's the most intriguing part of the current leak landscape. While the Pro and Pro Max are testing LOFIC with large sensors, early engineering samples suggest the Xiaomi 18 Ultra may actually move away from the 1-inch sensor that defined the 17 Ultra. A LOFIC-based architecture that delivers superior dynamic range without the physical footprint of a 1-inch module is apparently being evaluated as a potential direction.
That's a significant strategic choice if it holds. The 1-inch sensor has been the Ultra's imaging identity for two generations. Abandoning it in favor of a different architectural approach is either a genuine technological leap or a cost-driven trade-off — which one it is will only become clear when the Ultra ships.
September for standard and Pro. The Ultra follows separately in late 2026.
