Xiaomi is giving the rear screen of the
Xiaomi 18 Pro a much bigger role. The company has now shown a new feature that lets the small display run AI-generated apps for simple tasks.
This is a clear step up from last year's rear screen. It was already useful for things like controls, clocks and wallpapers. Now, Xiaomi wants it to become a small tool that you can use during the day.
The Rear Screen Can Do More
Xiaomi calls the new feature the “Versatile Rear Screen.” The idea is simple. Instead of limiting the display to fixed widgets, the phone can create small apps for different needs.
Xiaomi has shown several examples. There is an egg timer, a water reminder and a Pomodoro timer for work or study. You can also use the screen for English word practice and recipe suggestions.
These are not full phone apps. They are small tools made for quick actions. That makes sense for a rear display that is not meant to replace the main screen.
AI Creates the Small Tools
The interesting part is how these tools are made. Xiaomi says the rear screen can use AI to generate the apps. That gives the display much more room to grow. Instead of waiting for Xiaomi to add every new tool, AI can create simple functions based on what users need.
It is a clever use of AI I have to say. We have seen many phones add AI features that sound impressive but are rarely used. A small tool that solves a simple problem may have more value in daily use.
Xiaomi Says Millions Already Used the Rear Screen
Xiaomi says the previous rear-screen experience was already popular in China. The company recorded more than four million daily uses of its rear-screen app cards, while wallpaper changes passed 3.5 million in one day.
The new system builds on that idea. Xiaomi wants the rear display to be more than a place for changing pictures.
The
Xiaomi 18 Pro series is expected to launch in China later this month. Xiaomi has also indicated that the new Pro models will be available globally, which makes the rear screen more interesting this time.
The company has not yet shared every detail about the feature or confirmed which AI tools will be available in every market. Still, turning the rear display into a space for small AI apps could make it one of the most useful parts of the Xiaomi 18 Pro.
