Report: Samsung in talks to use MediaTek 5G chips

MediaTek Dimensity

MediaTek recently unveiled Dimensity 1000, its first 5G as well as high-end SoC in a long time. Many Chinese smartphone manufacturers like Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo have already announced their partnership with the Taiwanese chipmaker to use its latest 5G in their phones starting next year. And now, a fresh report says Samsung is also in talks with MediaTek to utilize its 5G chips in its upcoming budget smartphones, as per a report from Taiwan spotted by BGR.in.

5G is the buzz word right now and will not cool down anytime soon. Every country and carrier around the globe is working to procure the next-generation cellular technology. Like with every new technology, 5G is nowhere close to affordable nor stable at its current stage. Nonetheless, that will change soon as chipmakers are now able to make affordable SoCs with 5G for mid-range smartphones.

Qualcomm has been a leader in the smartphone SoC market for years due to a void of competition. But now as MediaTek has risen again with its Dimensity 5G SoC, an immense competition lies ahead for Qualcomm since Samsung of all names is in talks with MediaTek for partnership. If this deal comes into fruition, we might see MediaTek 5G chips in mid-range Galaxy A series as soon as next year. Also, Samsung will be using MediaTek silicon in their phones after a very long period of time.

Additionally, MediaTek is also working on two more budget 5G chips with code names MT6885 and MT6873 respectively which will enable 5G connectivity on more affordable smartphones. Strangely, even Huawei is expected to join the MediaTek 5G bandwagon with other smartphone OEMs.
