LG Foldable Patent Surfaces, The Screen Wraps Around the Frame

Starting in 2019, foldable phones have been popping out from some brands such as Samsung and Huawei, but not all phone makers still have an option on the market. One of these is LG, which doesn’t seem too active in the segment, or at least it wasn’t up until now. A new patent discovered by Dutch technology site – LetsGoDigital – does indeed appear to suggest LG is working on something very interesting; let’s have a closer look!

It’s been reported that the patent was filed with the China Intellectual Property Office on July 22nd, 2019; to then be approved for public disclosure on January 17th, 2020. The document was subsequently included in the WIPO Design Library. The patent contains 16 design sketches showing the LG foldable phone from all angles.

As we can see in the images, the phone portrayed uses a new folding screen design; with the display folding around the frame of the phone. Obviously, the folding part of the display will be much thinner compared to the rest of the phone. That’s because there are no additional components attached to it; it’s a “simple” flexible display.

Above the display, we then find a protruding camera setup and various sensors. This means the phone would still have a quite large top bezel, but since that’s the only bezel we see, it shouldn’t be too bad. Additionally, according to LetsGoDigital, the smartphone still features a 3.5mm audio jack at the bottom and the needed space for an USB port.

Overall, we have to admit that the design is rather interesting. The screen does not appear to bend that much, as it folds around the frame of the phone, so we could finally have a display completely without creases. It could also double the screen size very easily without taking too much additional space in the pocket.

Either way, as always, we’re talking about a patent. Which means we might never actually see a phone with this design hit the market.
