Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra uses the world’s first high permeable pressure relief valve

In a few hours, Xiaomi will officially release the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra. After the announcement of the Samsung GN2 image sensor, super fast-charging silicon-oxygen anode battery, and full phase change heat dissipation technology, there is more. The company revealed today that the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra will add another world premiere – a high permeability pressure relief valve.

According to the company, Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra will be Xiaomi’s first mobile phone that supports IP68 water resistance. This is the highest dust and water resistance rating for electrical equipment. This smartphone can survive in water to a depth of 1.5 meters for 30 minutes.

The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra debuts a high permeability pressure relief valve, which draws inspiration from professional diving watches. It is only breathable and impermeable, and the unit breathability is twice as much as that of current waterproof mobile phones.

Xiaomi is quite happy that it is finally releasing a smartphone with an IP68 rating. This is not exactly a new feature for smartphones, however, it is new for Xiaomi. According to reports, Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra obtained the IP68 certification from Rheinland.

IP68 does not mean it can last in the water forever

However, users have to be careful when using smartphones underwater. As water depth increases, the water pressure will also increase. This results in a pressure difference between the inside and outside of the mobile phone, which brings huge pressure and challenges to air-tightness. Therefore, some high-end professional diving watches come with a pressure relief valve. This allows air to circulate without leaking, and achieve a pressure balance between the inside and outside of the phone.  The Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra also uses this high-pressure relief valve.

The high permeability pressure relief valve of the Mi 11 Ultra is based on the same principle. It is only ventilated, not water-permeable, and has a unit air permeability of 25000ml/min at a pressure of 7kPa, which is twice as much as that of current waterproof mobile phones.

In addition, the high permeability pressure relief valve can not only reduce the probability of deepwater damage to a certain extent but also take effect and help when taking off and landing on an aircraft. It effectively prevents this device from damage due to extreme conditions (hot or cold). It also protects this device from the effects of squeezing.

Of course, having IP68 is not foolproof. Any IP68 equipment loses its effectiveness with time. With daily use, wear and fall will cause the airtight performance to decrease and cause the risk of water ingress.
