iPhone 15: Only Pro models will get a fast USB-C port

The iPhone 15, Apple’s upcoming smartphone, will be a significant turning point for the company as it will be the first to get the USB-C port instead of the Lightning port. On different versions of the series, different ports would take their place.

The majority of electronic gadgets must now support USB-C connectivity for charging and data transfer thanks to a new law that the European Union approved a few weeks ago. Because of this, Apple was compelled to declare that it will stop using its exclusive Lightning port on the upcoming iPhone model.

The fastest USB-C port will be exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro models

Only the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max (or iPhone 15 Ultra) would be eligible for USB-C 3.2. It’s one of the newest generations of universal connectivity, according to Ming-Chi Kuo. Apple might also make its premium products compatible with Thunderbolt 3 so they can work with Macs. In any case, they will be able to connect to external 4K 120 Hz displays and transfer data at full speed up to 40 Gb/s.

The iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, on the other hand, would only be eligible for much slower USB-C 2.0 connectors. Remember that the theoretical speed of this standard is just 480 Mb/s, which is the same speed that Lightning provides. Fans of the brand will not experience any advancement over the current model thanks to the most recent USB-C standards. Instead the iPhone 15s will not benefit from significantly faster transfer speeds.

However, this choice might enable Apple to distinguish between Pro and non-Pro versions. The company recently made this change to the iPad 2022, which only has a USB-C 2.0 port. Version 2.0 of USB 4 has already been unveiled by the USB Promoter Group, which offers double the available bandwidth. This increases the speed from 40 Gbps to 80 Gbps. And even enables the provision of up to 120 Gbps in a single direction. However, we do not anticipate it to be available in smartphones until at least 2024.
