New Configuration of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Is Even More Powerful – Apple A17 Is In Danger!

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

Each day, we are getting closer and closer to the launch of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. And as the chipset is pretty much set to launch this year, it is unsurprising to see some of its core information get leaked. After all, nothing stays hidden in the mobile industry for too long.

Nonetheless, the newly leaked info continues along the last configuration rumor. According to previous information, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 was set to release in a ‘1 + 5 + 2’ CPU config. But the latest info claims that Qualcomm is working on another version, which can potentially offer more performance.

Initial Details About the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

Just recently, Revengus, a Twitter tipster, shared some details about the clock speed of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. According to that, the Cortex X4 super core of the chipset will feature a 3.40 GHz running frequency. The tipster also shared that the GPU of the SoC will run at 900 MHz.

Here, a separate rumor from the past suggested that the frequency of the Cortex X4 in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 would run at 3.70 GHz. But the rumor did mention the spec might be for the next Snapdragon for Galaxy chipset, which might take Galaxy S24 phones to the next level.

Details of the New Configuration

According to Revengus, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is currently tested in two different configurations. One is the previously rumored ‘1 + 5 + 2’ config, while the other is the ‘2 + 4 + 2’ config. In other words, the newly rumored config has two Coretx X4 cores, which will seemingly debut with a 3.4 GHz clock speed in the base version of the chipset.

That said, the new configuration is also cutting down Cortex A720 cores. With that, it means that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 is shooting to bring as much performance as possible. And this would not be the first time where a chipset would try to take advantage of multiple performance cores.

Google stuck with the same practice for the Tensor G2 found in the Pixel 7 series and will also be inside the Google Pixel Tablet. That chipset featured two Cortex X1 units instead of one. But will Qualcomm release two different variants of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3?

Not really! Qualcomm will likely finalize one version after doing thorough testing on both configurations. But there’s a high chance that Qualcomm may choose the second configuration instead of the first one. Of course, it will depend on whether that version of the 8 Gen 3 offers the most performance for the least amount of consumed power.

Managing Thermals of Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

Assuming that Qualcomm will stick with two Cortex X4 cores for the 8 Gen 3, how will Qualcomm manage the thermals? Well, you can not forget that the new chipset with the stick with the 4nm process of TSMC. It is the same one that produced Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

So, all Qualcomm can do is tweak the chipset design. After all, it does not have the luxury of the 3nm technology that Apple possesses. But again, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is a very efficient chipset. Therefore, it would be safe to say that the 4nm process of TSMC will not disappoint.

Snapdragon for Galaxy

Wondering which configuration Samsung might use for its flagship phones next year? Any of the Snapdragon versions that beat the Apple A17 Bionic or even come close to its performance will have a “Snapdragon for Galaxy” tag. But then again, Samsung is reportedly planning to use Exynos 2400 for its S24 lineup. So, we will have to wait and see.
