Galaxy Z Fold5 announced with faster processor and improved hinge

Galaxy Z Fold5

Introducing the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 – the latest iteration in Samsung’s line of foldable smartphones. While not a complete overhaul, the Z Fold5 brings significant improvements and refinements to its predecessor, the best-selling Galaxy Z Fold4.

One of the major enhancements is the new Flex Hinge, which allows the phone to close fully flat. This innovative dual rail structure not only ensures a smoother folding experience but also offers added protection against external impacts. With the enhanced Flex mode, users can set the phone at various angles, perfect for hands-free photography or multitasking with split-screen applications.

Furthermore, the Galaxy Z Fold5 is now thinner and 10g lighter than its predecessor, making it more comfortable to handle. The phone’s construction remains robust, featuring an Armor Aluminum frame and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 panels on the external display and back. It also maintains the same IPX8 water-tight standard for added durability.

The display specifications remain unchanged from the previous model. On the outside, you’ll find a 6.2-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with a 2316x904px resolution and a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. Meanwhile, the internal display offers a 7.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen with a resolution of 2176x1812px and an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate. Notably, the main screen is now 30% brighter, peaking at 1,750 nits.

Under the hood, the Galaxy Z Fold5 is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform, the fastest mobile chip available. This upgrade ensures smooth performance and efficient multitasking. The phone also features an overhauled cooling system, which may aid in better heat dissipation due to its larger surface area.

In terms of cameras, the Galaxy Z Fold5 retains the same setup as its predecessor. The rear camera system includes a 50MP wide-angle shooter, a 12MP ultrawide camera, and a 10MP 3x zoom snapper. For selfies, there’s a 10MP unit on the cover screen and a 4MP under-display camera on the inside.

Battery capacity remains at 4,400mAh, supporting 25W wired charging and 15W wireless charging. While the charging speeds might not be groundbreaking compared to other devices, the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip should provide more efficient power consumption, resulting in improved battery life.

Samsung has also made notable improvements to multitasking on the Galaxy Z Fold5. The taskbar now accommodates up to four recent apps for quick switching, while the two-handed drag and drop functionality makes it easier to move content between different apps and screens.

Another exciting addition is the new S Pen Fold Edition, a slimmer and more compact stylus designed specifically for the Galaxy Z Fold5. Paired with the Slim S Pen Case, it offers a practical solution for note-taking and creative tasks.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 is available for pre-order in select markets, with sales commencing on August 11. You can choose from three elegant color options – Icy Blue, Phantom Black, and Cream. Additionally, there are three storage configurations: 12/256GB, 12/512GB, and 12/1TB, priced at €1,900/£1,749/$1,800, €2,020/£1,849/$1,920, and €2,260/£2,049/$2,160, respectively.
