The iPhone 15 series is pretty much near the horizon. As per past Apple events, Apple will officially unroll the curtains of its latest phones in September, which is just a few weeks away. As the official announcement draws near, more and more reports regarding the series have been popping up.
However, this time, the information comes directly from Apple. In case you don’t have Apple TV, Apple released multiple beta versions of tvOS 17. And ever since the first beta, Apple has placed multiple references for its upcoming devices. The identifiers include iPhone15,4, iPhone15,5, iPhone 16,1, and iPhone 16,2.
What’s the big deal with the beta versions of the Apple TV OS? Well, the tvOS 17 has just officially confirmed the chipset of the entire range.
Non-pro iPhone 15 Models Will Come with A16 Chip
Initially, the identifiers may seem confusing. Well, you have to know that Apple uses numbers to denote the chipset of the devices. Here, “iPhone15,x” are referencing the non-Pro iPhone 15 models and the iPhone 14 Pro models.
Considering the sequence of the tvOS 17 code, it’s safe to assume that the iPhone 15,4 and iPhone 15,5 are the upcoming iPhone 15 and 15 Plus. On the other hand, the “iPhone16,x” are identifiers for the Pro models. And this makes total sense as Apple references the iPhone 13, 13 Pro, 14, and SE 3rd Gen as “iPhone 14,x.”
Based on all of these referencing identifiers, the tvOS 17 code has confirmed that the non-Pro iPhone models will feature an Apple A16 chipset. On the other hand, the Pro models will come with the upcoming Apple A17 chip.
Of course, all of this is quite expected as Apple has been reserving newly unveiled chipset for Pro models. On the other hand, the non-Pro models get the last-gen chipset. But there were some rumors that suggested Apple may offer A17 in the entire range. And the tvOS 17 code has basically debunked them.

More Unreleased iPhone Models Found in the Code
The Apple tvOS 17 beta code gave some intriguing iPhone reference models. Apart from the iPhone 15 series identifiers, the code comes with iPhone 14,1 and iPhone 14,9 references. According to the sequence, these identifiers are iPhone models with Apple A15 chipset.
However, it’s quite hard to say what these references are exactly pointing it. Of course, they do raise the question of whether there will be more iPhone models with A15 chipset in the future. But you need to understand that many leftover model identifiers remain in Apple OS codes. Apple doesn’t really bother scraping them out.
What Do the iPhone14,1 and iPhone 14,9 Identifiers Could Mean
There are some interesting theories behind the 14,1 and 14,9 identifiers. Micheal Burkhardt suggests that these identifiers could be pointing at iPhone SE 3rd Gen and iPhone 13 mini. But these models already exist, so why is Apple referencing them in the new code?
Well, according to the theory, Apple is planning to relaunch them with a USB-C port. As you already know, Apple will fully shift to USB-C with the release of the iPhone 15 series. Previously, we’ve heard reports about Apple updating the existing iPhone 14 models with a USB-C port. After all, these models will be available in the official Apple store for at least another year.
Another theory suggests that one of the references is for a new iPhone SE model. But we won’t know for sure until there is more official information about the devices. So, do take these theories with a grain of salt. And of course, we’ll get you updated as more concrete information comes out.
