iPhone 16 Release Delayed in Indonesia Due to TKDN Certification Issues

Apple’s iPhone 16 series has been out for almost a month in global markets, but it has yet to be made available in Indonesia. The main reason for this delay is that the iPhone 16 has not passed the required TKDN certification, according to Indonesian Industry Minister, Mr. Agus Gumiwang.

Expired Certification

Mr. Agus revealed that Apple had previously secured the necessary certification for its products, but that approval has now expired. Without updating the certification, Apple is not allowed to sell the iPhone 16 series in Indonesia. One of the key points for obtaining this certification involves meeting certain standards set by the Indonesian government, which Apple has yet to fulfill.

Apple’s Investment Commitments

The delay in certification also has links to Apple’s investment pledge in Indonesia. Mr. Agus explained that Apple had agreed to invest in the country, but the amount they have contributed so far falls short of their initial promise.

Specifically, Apple pledged an investment of 1.71 trillion rupiah, but so far has only invested 1.48 trillion rupiah. This shortfall has raised concerns within the government, and until Apple addresses these issues, it will not receive the necessary approval to sell the iPhone 16 series in the region.

TKDN Certification Requirements

The TKDN certification process involves a number of rules, particularly when it comes to using local content in products. For mobile phones and other similar devices, at least 40% of the product’s components must be from within Indonesia. This policy is part of the government’s push to promote local industry and boost economic growth by encouraging foreign firms to invest in the country.

There are three main ways to meet the TKDN standards: local production, local app creation, or the development of innovative products within the country. Apple has chosen the innovation route, which involves creating new and original products or systems within Indonesia. However, their current efforts have not been enough to satisfy the government’s requirements.

Waiting for Further Action

According to Mr. Agus said, Apple is still in the process of getting its TKDN cert. However, the country will not issue the cert untill Apple fufill its pledge. The cert is key for any brand from abroad that wants to sell tech in the country, and Apple is no odd one out. With the pass still not done, users in the country will need to wait for the iPhone 16 to land in shops. No one knows how long this will take, as it rests on Apple’s next acts to fix the situation.
