One of the Android characteristics that makes it so popular among enthusiasts is its flexibility. Perhaps, it’s a benefit of being a Linux-based system with an open-source structure. Android works almost like a computer with the right abilities. A good example of that is running software that wasn’t made for phones. With Android, it’s perfectly possible to emulate old consoles thanks to emulators natively built for Android. More recently, another milestone was crossed: It’s now possible to play Windows PC games on Android. A popular app that does this is GameHub, made by GameSir, a company known for its game controllers. GameHub, along with a similar app called Winlator, works best on phones with Qualcomm Snapdragon chips. Unfortunately, the best of emulation has been limited to Snapdragon chips, but this will finally change. Thanks to a new update, it is also working much better on phones powered by MediaTek Dimensity chips.
MediaTek Dimensity Chips Now Emulate Windows PC Games With Better Performance
GameSir has just confirmed that GameHub now has improvements for MediaTek. These improvements are designed to provide better support for MediaTek’s Dimensity 9000 to 9400 chips, which utilize Mali GPUs. According to them, these chips can now run DirectX 9 to DirectX 11 PC games with performance that matches, or even beats, Snapdragon in some cases. We don’t know whether this update also reaches other powerful Dimensity series chips like the Dimensity 8000 series.
To improve things on MediaTek chips, the team focused on fixing issues with Mali GPUs. These include poor Vulkan support, missing drivers, and unstable shaders. They built a new system that turns DirectX commands into ones Mali GPUs can understand. They also had to add tweaks to fix problems when drivers weren’t working properly. GameHub’s team even got in touch with MediaTek to help develop drivers specifically for PC game emulation. That could be good news not only for MediaTek users, but also Pixel smartphone owners. After all, Google’s Tensor chips also bring Mali GPUs.
This is an important milestone for owners of MediaTek-powered phones.. These devices always suffered from poor optimization in emulation. Several console emulators don’t run well on MediaTek chips due to poor optimization. This is starting to change, even with very timid steps, and the reason is that more and more MediaTek devices and Mali GPUs are reaching the market. The latest effort made by GameHub should also serve as inspiration for other developers. In the end, this is a big win for users in general. More Android users can enjoy a better experience when emulating Windows games.
