HONOR is bringing a small rear display to more phones. The company has revealed the design of its new HONOR 700 series in China, and all three models will feature a second screen on the back.
The lineup includes the HONOR 700, HONOR 700 Pro, and HONOR 700S. Pre-orders have already opened through HONOR's online store in China, although the company has yet to confirm the launch date.
A second screen on all three phones
The rear display sits inside the camera module and has a square shape. HONOR has not shared its size or full list of features yet. However, earlier leaks point to a 1.72-inch screen.
The small panel should make it easier to take selfies with the main camera. It could also show the time, alerts, and other useful details without turning on the main display.
This is not a new idea for the phone market. Xiaomi has also brought rear screens back to its recent flagship phones. HONOR is now taking the same idea to a wider range of devices.
Colors and storage options confirmed
HONOR has confirmed four colors for the new series: Blue Tone, Cold White, Clear Sky, and Pink Mist.
The company has also revealed the memory options for each phone:
- HONOR 700: 12GB/256GB, 12GB/512GB, 16GB/256GB, and 16GB/512GB.
- HONOR 700 Pro: 12GB/256GB, 12GB/512GB, and 16GB/512GB.
- HONOR 700S: 12GB/256GB and 12GB/512GB.
Prices are still unknown, and HONOR has not shared the full hardware details.
Big camera and battery upgrades are expected
Leaks point to a 200MP main camera across the range. The HONOR 700 Pro may also get a 50MP periscope camera for optical zoom. Another reported feature is support for an external 200mm telephoto lens.
Battery capacity could reach 9,000mAh, while the Pro model may support 50W wireless charging. These details are not official yet, so we will have to wait for HONOR's launch event.
My take
The rear screen is the feature that makes the HONOR 700 series stand out. I like the idea of using the main cameras for selfies, especially if the small display gives a clear preview.
But the real test will be how useful HONOR makes that screen. A few basic widgets are not enough to justify it on their own. The camera quality, battery life, and final prices will matter much more.
