Last month, many rumors emerged suggesting the launch of a non-Elite
Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. The chipset would be a direct successor to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 that we never had, but would sit below an Elite-tier Snapdragon 8. Today,
Qualcomm confirmed the launch of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 SoC for later this year. Keep in mind that this isn't a "s" version, so it should be more powerful.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 - A New Chipset for Flagship Killers
Qualcomm didn't detail the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 SoC, Alex Katouzian, General Manager for Mobile, Compute, and XR at Qualcomm, said: "We developed this chipset to give you more choices and flexibility, while still delivering flagship features".
That suggests the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 will sit a tier below the
Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. It still offers some features that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 offers. Katouzian said Qualcomm will bring more details about the SD 8 Gen 5 later this year. Sadly, the chipmaker did not reveal the launch timeframe for the mobile platform. Previous rumors claimed that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 would carry model number SM8845.
More Details Coming Later This Year
Unfortunately, it's hard to paint a picture of this SoC without the specs sheet. But like said before, it will sit beyond CPUs like the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4. It won't reach the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, but the performance should still be great. This CPU will aim in some flagship killer smartphones like those from POCO, iQOO or the devices in the OnePlus R series.
This CPU will probably help Qualcomm regain territory in fields where MediaTek gained ground. Chipsets like those in the Dimensity 8000 series have been gaining ground among some cost-effective flagships. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 could be a luxurious answer in this trending segment. We will wait for more details to come soon.
