Red Magic will launch the 12 Pro+ in China on October 15 at 2:30 PM local time, and the screen is the main attraction.
A Weibo post claims the phone has a 185Hz BOE display, a custom display chip called G1 and a first-of-its-kind under-screen material called X11. Some of that is confirmed, but most of it still isnt.
What RedMagic Has Confirmed
RedMagic says the screen bezel shrinks to 0.96mm, down from 1.25mm on the previous generation. That is a cut of about 23 percent. The front also uses a ninth-generation under-display camera, so there is no punch-hole or notch. The phone runs the
Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip, and reservations are already open on JD.com.
The Claims Still Waiting for Proof
I could not find any other source that confirms the 185Hz refresh rate, the G1 chip or the X11 material. RedMagic also calls its under-display camera a world first, but that claim has not been checked independently. Treat these details as unverified until the launch event. Even if 185Hz is real, I think it only matters if games can reach it. Many mobile games run well below that, so the number may look better on a spec sheet than in daily play.
My Take on the Bezel and Camera
A 0.96mm bezel is thinner than the 0.99mm bezel OPPO announced for the Find X10. The gap is 0.03mm, which nobody will notice when holding the phone. RedMagic has also not said whether its figure applies to all four sides, as
OPPO’s does. The camera matters more. A hidden selfie camera gives gamers a clean, uninterrupted screen, and I think that is the right choice for a
gaming phone. The cost is image quality, because under-display cameras have generally produced softer selfies than punch-hole ones. RedMagic should show real sample photos, and brightness results over the camera area, before anyone calls this a win.
What to Expect Next
Pricing has not been announced. The phone is expected to reach global markets as the Red Magic 12 Pro, though that is not confirmed either. Until the launch event and the first reviews, I would treat the display as promising, not proven.
