Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide is starting to take shape. Tipster Ice Universe
dropped the first concrete dimensions, and they tell an interesting story about how Samsung is approaching the wide-format foldable category. The phone goes broader than any previous Fold — but it's not simply copying what Huawei did with the
Pura X Max.
It's thinner. Significantly thinner.
Key Points
- Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide dimensions from Ice Universe: 161.4 x 123.9 x 4.3mm unfolded, 161.4 x 82.2 x 9.8mm folded
- Narrower than the Huawei Pura X Max (161.4mm vs 166.5mm width) but noticeably slimmer — 4.3mm unfolded vs Huawei's design, and 9.8mm folded vs Huawei's 11.2mm
- Inner display uses a near-square 4:3 aspect ratio — a genuine shift toward tablet-like proportions versus Samsung's traditionally tall, narrow Fold layout
- Cover display sits at approximately 4.7:3 — wider than previous Fold cover screens but not as square as the interior panel
- Expected to launch alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8 at Samsung's summer event
Samsung Goes Wide — But Stays Slim
The Z Fold 8 Wide's 4.3mm unfolded thickness is the standout number here. Achieving that in a wide-format foldable — which demands a larger hinge mechanism and a broader panel — is a real engineering challenge. Huawei's Pura X Max is 11.2mm folded. Samsung's wide variant comes in at 9.8mm folded, a meaningful gap that translates directly to pocket comfort.
The trade-off for going slightly narrower than the Pura X Max is real but minor. At 161.4mm versus Huawei's 166.5mm, the Z Fold 8 Wide sacrifices a few millimetres of screen real estate in exchange for a more manageable one-handed grip. For most users, that's probably the right call.
The 4:3 Inner Display Changes How You Use the Phone
Samsung's current Fold lineup uses a tall, narrow inner display that's always felt more like a stretched phone than a true tablet. The near-square 4:3 aspect ratio of the Z Fold 8 Wide's inner panel is a different proposition entirely. Video content, web pages, spreadsheets, and split-screen multitasking all work more naturally on a square display than a tall one.
The letterboxing trade-off is worth acknowledging. Because the panel is squarer rather than taller, black bars will be slightly more prominent when streaming 16:9 or 21:9 video content compared to the Pura X Max. That's physics, not a design failure — but buyers who watch a lot of video should factor it in.
Why Samsung Is Moving Now
Huawei already proved the wide foldable concept works. Apple's foldable is widely expected later this year, and early leaks suggest it's also going wide rather than tall. Samsung sitting still with its traditional tall Fold while two major competitors push wide-format designs was never a long-term option.
The Z Fold 8 Wide doesn't need to out-spec the Pura X Max on every dimension. It needs to be the most compelling wide foldable for buyers already in the Samsung ecosystem — and a 4.3mm unfolded profile is a strong opening argument.
Summer launch alongside the standard Fold 8 and Flip 8. More details expected as the event approaches.
