The Chinese government are cracking down on
illegal lead acid
battery makers after it was found than 138 people at a village near Taizhou had suffered ill effects from a nearby
battery plant.
The
battery plant near the village had failed to dispose of waste properly leading to high levels of
pollution. The 138 villagers were found to have excessive lead levels in their
blood because of the increased levels.
This is not an isolated
event either as the government departments have learned that out of the 388 registered
battery makers in
China 110 had failed to report their safety standards in last years government survey.
Increased lead in the areas around these villages is not just a local concern however as these countryside areas are often used as farm land for animals and vegetables which often find their way in to national supermarkets!
