WhatsApp is taking a new bold step in enhancing the security of its users' data. The popular messenger has just announced it is now getting support for passkey-encrypted backups. What this means in practice is that you can use your fingerprint, face, or screen lock code to encrypt your WhatsApp chat backups.

WhatsApp Chat Backups Get The Same Security as Your Chats and Calls

The company goes on to explain that with "just a tap or glance, the same security that protects your personal chats and calls on WhatsApp will now reach your chat backups". Hence, they are always "safe, accessible, and private" with the new feature.
WhatsApp announced that the feature will roll out gradually "over the coming weeks and months". Once you have it, you can go to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup > End-to-end encrypted backup and pick the passkey option from there.

Why This Update Is Important

  • Adds an extra layer of security to chat backups, protecting sensitive information.
  • Aligns backup security with the end-to-end encryption already applied to messages and calls.
  • Reduces the risk of unauthorized access if your phone or cloud account is compromised.
  • Makes it easier for users to trust that their data is fully private, both locally and in the cloud.
  • Supports multiple authentication methods like fingerprint, face recognition, or screen lock code, giving flexibility and convenience.

To explain things, the update is particularly relevant in today’s digital environment. After all, your personal and professional conversations often contain sensitive data. With the extension of encryption to backups, WhatsApp ensures that users have greater control over their privacy.
This is a good step forward in securing personal communication and reinforces the platform’s reputation as a safe space for messaging. After some controversies involving Meta and WhatsApp in the past years, this feature enhances security and might raise the user's trust in the platform.
