Oppo N1 and Others Get 4.4 Update Through OmniROM

The fastest growing open source variant of Android, OmniROM, has announced that its nightly builds for its version of Android 4.4 (KitKat) now supports several new devices including the Oppo N1, Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia T, and the International and American AT&T HTC One.

The new additions join the Oppo Find 5, the Oppo R819 and thirteen other devices including the usual suspects: the Nexus 4 and 5, both Nexus 7s as well as the Samsung Galaxy S2, S3 and the Galaxy Note II and III.

This is the second major update that OmniROM has posted since it started releasing “nightly” builds on November 26th. Nightly builds are a developer term referring to builds of an open source Android OS, that is released to the community every night, or on a “nightly basis.” The idea is to bring the latest build to the community in order to find and fix bugs as quickly as possible. The first major update from OmniROM focused on bringing additional features to the OS.

While the contributors to the OmniROM project are undoubtedly talented, it is important to keep in mind that these are cutting edge builds and are not guaranteed to come bug free. In fact, while reports indicate that initial impressions of the newest build are positive, if you are looking for a stable phone/device experience, you are better off sticking with a more established OS.

While the Nexus line of devices have already gotten an over the air update to Google's stock version of Android 4.4, for many of the devices this represents their first opportunity to upgrade to the latest version of Android. You can read more on OmniROM's official blog.
