This year is certainly the maiden year for the introduction of 5G technology. At the MWC 2019 exhibition, 5G became the core keyword. Whether it is 5G chips, 5G equipment suppliers, operators or mobile terminal manufacturers, they are all vying to showcase their latest 5G progress. Major smartphone manufacturers like Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, ZTE and others have all released 5G smartphones. From the current trend, the second half of 2019 will usher in a concentrated high-end period of 5G mobile phones, and the first half of 2020 will officially open the commercialization of the technology.
As of now, 5G smartphones will be quite expensive and many people will not be able to afford it. Zhang Yunyong, president of China Unicom Research Institute, said that in the second half of this year, “commoners” will be able to purchase 5G phones as the prices will drop down to 4G level but for now, it may be a burden on users with a mid-range budget.
Earlier, China Mobile official also revealed that in 2019, the carrier will jointly launch 2.6GHz 5G mobile phones and will accelerate 4.9GHz to mature stage. According to China Mobile official, in 2019, the 2.6GHz and 4.9GHz end-to-end scale tests will be conducted in five cities including Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Suzhou, Wuhan, and Shanghai. At the same time, it will actively carry out research and development and testing of smart networks.
