Essential Second Phone is in Early Stages, Key Details Revealed

Essential Phone

It’s been two years since Essential Phone PH-1 made its debut and the smartphone is still going strong. When it comes to software support, Essential Products has always been the best at the game by offering monthly security patches. Above all, the smartphone maker pushes a major OS update on the same day the Google releases them. In fact, Essential Products has now become the comparison standard for other OEM manufacturers in software support.

Sadly, the brand hasn’t launched any new device since the original Essential Phone meaning the users will have to jump to other brands for new hardware even if they don’t want to. Well, it seems like that is going to change soon. As per the recent report, Essential Products is now working on its next product.

Gizchina News of the week

We now know that the upcoming device is codenamed “gem”. For those who’re unaware, the first Essential Phone was codenamed “mata” suggesting that there is no obvious pattern in the codename. Furthermore, the commit entry also reveals that the upcoming device will run the latest Android 10 operating system. Surprisingly, the device was found running the open-source alternative to Google Play Services called “microg”. The brand might be using this version since the device is in the early testing phase.

Essential’s next-gen device will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 chipset. The report also mentions a few camera sensors namely 16MP, 48MP, 13MP, and 20MP Sony camera sensors as well as a 5MP Samsung sensor. It is highly unlikely that the single device will use these sensors. As mentioned earlier, it highly likely that the company is using this hardware for early testing. We might see the company using different products in the final design. There are still various unknowns in the upcoming device. It is still pretty exciting to see what the company has in stores this time.
