Microsoft Edge browser now uses 27% less RAM on Windows 10

When the browser uses a lot of RAM, it slows down the entire operating system. Accordingly, in order to avoid this, users have to limit the number of open tabs, but developers of browsers can improve memory usage a bit, as is the case with Microsoft Edge.

Microsoft has improved the Edge browser. It uses less memory as Microsoft notes in its blog, the company’s mission is to provide the best browser for Windows. The words of the developers are not at odds with the case.

Recently, Edge switched to the Chromium engine and began to work faster. And after the release of the large functional Windows 10 May 2020 Update, the browser has become even more economical with regard to RAM. Its use has decreased by up to 27%. True, Microsoft makes a clarification that “performance on individual devices depends on configuration and use”, but on the whole, everyone should feel Edge’s more economical attitude to memory.

Windows 10 OS and Microsoft Edge browser market share

Netmarketshare, a web analytics company, has recently published statistics on the prevalence of various Internet browsers and operating systems in the world as of May 2020. If in April the share of Windows 10 decreased from 57.34% to 56%, then in May it began to recover, reaching 57.83%.

With the recovery of Windows 10, the Linux platform has not stopped growing. It received a stake of 3.17% in May after 2.87% in April and 1.36% in March. MacOS positions remain almost unchanged – the share decreased from 9.75% to 9.68%. But Windows 7 continues to fall – now the OS accounts for 24% of the market after April 25.59% and March 26.3%.

Regarding browsers, Google browser continues to confidently dominate and enhance its superiority. Chrome already accounts for 69.81%, a new record after April’s 69.18%. Edge rose slightly from 7.76% to 7.86%, but Firefox’s share in third place fell from 7.25% to 7.23%.

As said above, Microsoft Edge browser has made a surprising move. Last year, the Redmond-based company decided to rebuild its browser based on Chromium, the same foundation as Google Chrome. Of course, this and other factors like Windows 10 popularity made Edge become the second-most popular desktop browser.

However, we should point out a few factors that helped Microsoft Edge in becoming more popular. A few years ago, it became available for iOS and Android devices. This attracted more users. And Microsoft has regularly optimized its browser-based on more users’ preferences. Even Google admitted it will learn from Edge for better tabs management.
