OnePlus to launch a new smartphone with Snapdragon 662/665 in September

OnePlus

OnePlus enthusiasts will remember 2020 as the year when the company decided to become a company that makes more than flagships. Apart from releasing the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro, the company also revealed its first mid-range phone in years. The OnePlus Nord sits as a more affordable choice for those wanting excellent cameras and 5G connectivity. Under the hood, the phone carries the Snapdragon 765G and is one of the few phones in the mid-range segment to include Optical Image Stabilizaiton. According to reports, the company will announce another OnePlus Nord this year featuring Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 which will the company’s most affordable 5G chipset. Now, new reports indicate that there’s even a budget phone coming with LTE connectivity.

A new OnePlus phone with Snapdragon 662 / Snapdragon 665

We have to say, take this report with a pinch or two of salt. After all, it comes from a leaker that goes by Chun (@Boby25846908) on Twitter. He’s not the most popular leakster in the market, but apparently knows a thing or two about OnePlus plans. According to him, Oppo will launch a phone powered by the Snapdragon 662 chipset in Early September. This upcoming device will have price tag that sits below the INR 20,000 range, which is just below $267. Moreover, he states that OnePlus will follow suit at the end of September with its own smartphone featuring the same Snapdragon 662 SoC or the Snapdragon 665 chipset. This phone will have a price tag between INR 16,000 to INR 18,000 ~$213 to $240.

Gizchina News of the week

The Snapdragon 662 is an Octa-Core chipset that sits slightly below the Snapdragon 665 SoC. This latter chipset is nothing beyond a mid-range performer and is present in budget smartphones like the last year’s Redmi Note 8 and 8T. Making a smartphone with this chipset is not a surprise from companies that have a good presence in the mid-range segment. However, it will be a massive surprise from OnePlus. To not say that this move is a rather unexpected move.

Unfortunately, we still don’t have any strong evidence of a smartphone with the aforementioned chipsets. The alleged OnePlus Nord with Snapdragon 690 already appeared on GeekBench. For that reason, we’ll take this report as a rumor right now. However, if the company intends to release such smartphone soon, then we’ll probably hear more about it during the next month.

Would you buy an OnePlus smartphone featuring a Snapdragon 662 or 665?
