OnePlus 16 Launches Monday With a Huge 9,000mAh Battery

OnePlus will launch the OnePlus 16 in China on Monday, October 12. The phone is built for people who care about battery life and gaming, and they confirmed the date at its gaming conference on September 28. The phone uses Qualcomm's new Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip and a 9,000mAh battery. The price has not been announced.

Battery and Charging

The 9,000mAh battery is the largest OnePlus has put in a flagship. It is about 23 percent bigger than the 7,300mAh cell in the OnePlus 15. OnePlus has also confirmed 50W wireless charging, and reports say wired charging reaches 100W, but the company has not confirmed that number yet. A bigger battery only helps if the phone stays efficient, so real-world tests will matter more than the spec sheet.

Screen and Gaming

The display comes from BOE and runs at up to 185Hz in supported games. OnePlus has also confirmed 165Hz across the whole system, not only in games. The phone adds three in-house chips for the display, touch response and connectivity. OnePlus named games such as Arena Breakout and Naruto Mobile for native 185 frames per second. Support depends on each game tho, so the 185Hz figure will not apply everywhere.

Cameras and Software

The main camera is a 200MP sensor measuring 1/1.4 inches. It sits beside a 50MP ultrawide and a 50MP periscope telephoto with 3x zoom. The phone runs ColorOS 17 on Android 17. Leaks also point to a dedicated AI button, triple-frequency GPS and four-frequency Beidou. None of those extras are confirmed yet.

Price and Availability

OnePlus has not announced a price yet. An earlier leak pointed to 4,999 yuan (about $704) wich is not that bad for a gaming flagship in my opinion, but newer pre-booking information questions that figure. For comparison, the OnePlus 15 started at 3,999 yuan (about $563) in China last October. Some reports point to a global launch in November, but OnePlus has not confirmed it, and there is no India date either. Until then, buyers in the US and Europe would need to import the phone. The launch event should settle the price, the wired charging speed and the extras.
