Apple could oust the existing Magic Keyboard’s floating design if a new patent application for a Magic Keyboard is anything to go by. The Cupertino-based tech company recently unveiled the entry-level 2021 iPad and iPad mini. Now, Apple seems focused on redesigning the Magic Keyboard accessory. Apple unveiled the iPad Pro with an M1 chip earlier this year. The 12.9-inch iPad Pro adopted mini-LED technology that offers a resolution of 2732 x 2048 pixels.

Regrettably, the 12.9-inch version of the iPad Pro isn’t compatible with the old Magic Keyboard because it is 0.5mm thicker. However, the 11-inch iPad Pro 2021 supports the old Magic Keyboard. Now, Apple has filed a new patent for a strong, yet flexible Magic Keyboard. In other words, the company could be gearing up to change the floating design of the current generation Magic Keyboard. Aside from that, the new patent application includes an iPad Pro case.

The iPad Pro’s existing Magic Keyboard makes the tablet look like it is floating over the keyboard, while the device’s position. Moreover, its hinge allows users to adjust the tablet’s position. A recently filed patent has a Magic Keyboard, showcasing the iPad on a couple of hinges that are placed on the keyboard’s top end. Furthermore, the patent suggests that the Magic Keyboard will slide forward with the iPad. As a result, users will get a better viewing angle.

Aside from that, there’s another layer below the keyboard that allows users to fold the iPad like a laptop. The new patent also suggests that Apple will be offering a design with better “overall possible viewing angle adjustability.” Moreover, Apple assures that the new design will improve system stability even at higher viewing angles. Furthermore, the patent implies that the newfangled design will support opening and closing like a laptop. Also, it will be lighter in terms of weight and will use affordable components.

What Else To Expect?

It is worth mentioning here that the new design adopts the same hinge mechanism as the current generation Magic Keyboard. Moreover, despite filing a patent for the new design, Apple might decide to not make and launch the actual product. To recall, several tech companies patent new designs that never see the light of the day. However, if Apple is working on a new Magic Keyboard, details about its exact launch date are still scarce. Apple first added the Magic Keyboard on the 2020 iPad Pro. The 2021 iPad Pro series received a slightly overhauled Magic Keyboard.
