Sustainable development has become a strategic issue that companies cannot ignore. IBM, which has been in this field for 50 years continues to hand in its basic innovation answers this year. According to the company, “2nm chips will allow smartphones to be charged every 4 days”. At the MEET2022 Smart Future Conference, Dr. Xie Dong, Vice President of IBM  shared how IBM is accelerating technological innovation and working with partners to achieve a sustainable future.

Here are the highlights of his speech

Highlights:

In the next ten years, the top three business risks faced by enterprises are related to the environment. This will include extreme weather, failure of climate action, and man-made environmental damage. Under the dual-carbon goal, sustainable development is not only the social responsibility of all enterprises. It is also a strategic issue that enterprises must face.

IBM proposed this year to achieve net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2030. The application of quantum computers in AI/ML optimization, molecular structure analysis, and simulation has shown great advantages, and the future of large-scale commercial use will not be too far.

One of the highlights of this speech is the capacity of a 2nm chip. According to IBM, 2nm chips will make it possible for smartphone charging to be once in four days. Presently, depending on the user and battery capacity, smartphone charging is usually once a day. Heavy users charge their smartphones multiple times daily.

Sustainable development is the common task of all mankind

In the era of rapid economic and technological development, the various challenges facing mankind are still extremely severe. For example, the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters caused by climate change are ravaging the world. In fact, government enterprises, investors,  and consumers are paying more and more attention to sustainable development issues related to the environment.

The United Nations adopted a sustainable development goal with 17 sub-topics in 2015 as an initiative to eradicate poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that all people can enjoy peace and prosperity. This is not only an advocacy and appeal, but also a program of action. At present, under China’s dual carbon goals, sustainable development is not only the social responsibility of all companies but also a strategic issue that companies must face.

How should companies face these challenges? Like big data, artificial intelligence, hybrid cloud, and the upcoming quantum computing, new technologies will bring significant changes and improvements to sustainable development.
