Qualcomm unleashed the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 back the last year at its Snapdragon Summit event. The company took Samsung as the supplier and manufacturer of these chips, however, the results apparently didn’t amaze Qualcomm. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is reportedly heating under certain circumstances, and Qualcomm decided to rush its orders to TSMC. However, rather than bringing the same chip under TSMC’s wings, the company will change its name to the expected Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus. The processor will bring a significant performance growth of around 10 percent.
To those unaware, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus is manufactured in the new 4 nm architecture. It packs 1 x ARM Cortex-X2 cores, 3 x ARM Cortex-A710 cores, and 4 x ARM Cortex-A510 cores. For graphical tasks, the device packs an Adreno 730 GPU. We don’t know exactly how the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus will tweak the performance, but apparently, TSMC’s manufacturing delivers a better overall SoC than what Samsung did.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus phones are coming in June
According to the tipster, Yogesh Brar, Qualcomm’s new generation Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus performed very well in internal testing. From the test machine, the new platform offers good temperature control, stable chip operation, and better battery life than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. According to the tipster, the first commercial products with this chip will arrive in early June. It’s an interesting comeback for the “Plus” tier of Snapdragon chips.

The Snapdragon 855+ was a remarkable success, but these chips started to lose relevancy in 2020 with few Snapdragon 865+ phones, and even fewer Snapdragon 888+ phones being manufactured. This year, however, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus may become more popular. After all, it fixes certain issues with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, and companies will prefer to adopt the upgraded unit rather than the current one.
Worth noting, that the first smartphones coming in early June, may point to a release in late May. Qualcomm will likely make an announcement about this chip upgrade.
There is also a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 4G
As per Chinese Weibo blogger @李安Angangah, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 4G variant will arrive at the same time as the Plus variant. You may be wondering why Qualcomm still produces these chips… Well, we need to say that Huawei needs flagship SoCs as well. We can’t see other brands picking this variant, as every one of them is now in the 5G segment. Huawei, however, can’t use 5G chips and needs an upgrade for the Snapdragon 888 Gen 1. Their recently-released Huawei Mate XS 2 is a compelling foldable smartphone but brings the Snapdragon 888 4G. We don’t know if the company’s possible way to 5G will be ready for 2022. Thus, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 4G will likely be the choice for the upcoming Huawei Mate 50 series.
