Xiaomi’s new patent uses electrostatic adsorption to reduce creases in foldable phones

Chinese brand, Xiaomi, is one of the leaders in the smartphone market. The company has a couple of new techs that are yet to hit the market. However, it is still working on more. A recent patent filing by Xiaomi shows that it is still trying to make the foldable phone better.Ā According to the China Patent Publication Announcement of the State Intellectual Property Office (No: CN217880704U), the patent for “folding screen components and folding electronic devices” applied by Beijing Xiaomi Mobile Software Co., Ltd. was authorized and published.

Patent details

The abstract shows that the present patent relates to a folding screen assembly and a folding electronic device. It includes a flexible screen, an electrostatic adsorption layer, and a support structure. However, it has another two support structures. The first and second (dual) support structures all support the flexible screen. The dual support structures are not static, they are moveable. These structures are arranged on both sides of the first support structure. The dual support structure can also fold and unfoldĀ relative to each other. This is to drive the flexible screen to fold or unfold, an electrostatic adsorption.

The layer includes a first electrostatic adsorption layer. This layer is arranged on the surface of the first support structure facing the flexible screen. Also, the first layer is used to generate electrostatic adsorption force. Thus, the flexible screen can be adsorbed on the first electrostatic adsorption layer.

According to the patent specs, through the above technical solution, the first electrostatic adsorption layer and the flexible screen can separate from each other or connect. The electrostatic adsorption force generated by the first layer can absorb the flexible screen. This helps to avoid the bending of the flexible screen during the folding process. It also reduces the flexibility of the flexible screen. By so doing, it improves the crease situation n most foldable phones. In fact, it also improves the service life of folding screen components.
