iPhone 15 Pro solid-state button patent exposure: say bye to physical keys

As we all know, Apple has been working towards a totally wireless and non-porous mobile phone. The company will likely stick with the magnetic charging solution on this device. It will also leave no holes in the body and may even expunge the maintenance gap on the Apple Watch. Not long ago, Ming-Chi Kuo issued another document confirming that the high-end iPhone 15 Pro will use “solid-state buttons”, that is, cancel physical buttons. There are also reports that there will be a button-like shape on the frame of the iPhone 15 Pro. However, this will be the same as the Home button of the iPhone 7/8 and other models. This means that users will not be able to press down the button. The Taptic Engine linear motor will be mobilized to simulate the feedback of the physical button.

iPhone 15 Pro solid-state button works like the Home button

However, a recent patent exposed by Apple shows that the new solid-state buttons will bring more functions. According to the patent diagram, both the power button and the volume button of the iPhone 15 Pro support force sensing. This means that different forces can match different operations and functions.

For example, lightly pressing will increase the volume slowly, and increasing the force will increase the volume quickly. This may make it convenient for users to quickly adjust the volume. The power button can open more functional options through different strengths, which is equivalent to an extra shortcut button. And this realization effect is very similar to the 3D Touch that Apple cut off back then. This technology was first released on the iPhone 6S, allowing the iPhone to sense how hard the user is pressing the screen, bringing a new dimension of operation. It is important to note that only the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max versions will have this feature.
