There’s no denying that more and more PC users are upgrading to Microsoft Windows 11. And there are many reasons behind it. But there are still a ton of users who are using Windows 7, 8, and 10. Well, if you are a gamer who’s still running a machine with Windows 7 or 8, Steam has a piece of bad news for you.

According to the latest announcement, Steam will discontinue the support for Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 after this year. That is, the change will soon take place on January 1, 2024. Before you start to blame Valve for coming to this decision, just know there’s a good reason behind it.

Running Steam on Windows 7 or 8? It’s Time for an Upgrade!

Valve decided to end the support for Steam on Windows 7 and Windows 8 because the platform relies on Google Chrome. And in case you didn’t know, Google no longer offers any support for Windows 7 and Windows 8. So, Valve would not want its users to get a bad experience moving forward.

That was pretty much why Valve decided to end the support next year. However, the good news is that Steam will have full support on Windows 10. And the support for this Windows version will likely be here for a long time. In fact, according to Valve’s own survey, more than half of the users are running Windows 10.

On that note, if you want to update your PC to Windows 10, you should be able to do it for free. But for some users, getting to Windows 11 could make more sense. But again, to install Windows 11, you will need a relatively recent PC as the OS has some hardware restrictions. No matter what, you should get your PC updated by this year. Otherwise, you will be locked out of your Steam games.
