Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 Redefines Foldable Phones with Premium Features

Last year, Xiaomi made a lot of noise with the debut of the Mix Fold 2. The phone brought some serious competition to the foldable market. This year, Xiaomi took things to the next level. The successor, Xiaomi Mix Fold 3, comes with a refined hinge, upgraded camera configuration, and, most importantly, flagship specs.

As a matter of fact, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 is currently the thinnest foldable phone that you can purchase. That, combined with the other flagship-grade specs, makes the Fold 3 a worthy sequel for the lineup.

Main Highlights of the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3

As mentioned earlier, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 brings a lot of upgrades over its predecessor. Let’s take a closer look at the main highlights:

Slimmer and Thinner Profile

Mix Fold 2 measured 5.4mm in the unfolded state, while the phone measured 11.2mm when folded. If you thought that was impressive, you need to check out the dimensions of the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3. Xiaomi has made it even slimmer than its predecessor!

The Mix Fold 3 measures just 5.26mm in the unfolded state. On the other hand, when folded, the phone measures 10.89mm. Xiaomi has managed to achieve this profile by integrating a vertically stacked motherboard. In addition to that, the hinge of the device saw a massive upgrade.

Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 comes with an all-new proprietary hinge, which has a total of 198 components. What’s more important is that the hinge takes 17% less internal space. Also, the hinge boasts a 3-element structure and a total of 14 micro-hinges. The micro-hinges tuck under the main folding display.

This hinge configuration enhances the durability of the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3. And let’s not forget to mention that the hinge has a carbon ceramic steel rotating mechanism, which smoothens out the folding and unfolding action.

Additionally, the new hinge of the Mix Fold 3 supports an opening angle range of 45 degrees to 135 degrees. That means you can use the foldable phone as a mini laptop if you want to.

Display of the Mix Fold 3

It’s not just about the hinge that makes the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 stand out from the competition. The phone also comes with impressive specs. For example, the displays. Both the internal and external screens of the phone have the E6 OLED display.

The internal panel is 8.03-inch in size, which brings a 1960 x 2160 px resolution. This panel has support for Dolby Vision and HDR 10+. These two display techs will give you get an enhanced and fully immersive viewing experience. And as the panel features Ultra-Thin Glass, you can expect it to be highly resistant to scratches.

And the external panel is 6.56-inch in size and is covered by Gorilla Glass Victus 2. It can reach up to 2560 nits in terms of brightness, offering you a better viewing experience under bright sunlight. And as both the displays sports 120Hz refresh rate, all the motion on the panels will seem lifelike and smooth.

Camera Configuration of the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3

The Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 equips a quad camera setup on the back. Its primary sensor is a Sony IMX800 50MP sensor, which comes with OIS. The primary sensor is accompanied by a 12MP ultrawide module. And for handling zoom, Xiaomi has integrated a 10MP telephoto sensor with 3x magnification capabilities.

That’s not all! You will also find a 10MP periscope camera on the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3. It brings up to 5x optical zoom. And as both the telephoto modules have OIS, you will be impressed with the image stability and clarity of the device.

When it comes to specifics, the main camera of the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 is equivalent to 46mm, the ultrawide is 15mm, the telephoto is 75mm, and the periscope is 115mm equivalent. In short, the camera configuration of the phone is more than enough to click picture-perfect shots.

SoC, Battery, RAM, and Storage

Xiaomi has packed the Mix Fold 3 with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset. As I’ve previously reported, it’s the overclocked version of 8 Gen 2 or the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2 SoC. Thanks to that, the phone can basically handle anything you throw at it, whether it’s resource-intensive apps or AAA games.

To offer you interruption-free gaming and work experience, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 integrates a large 4800mAH battery. It supports 67W wired charging, which can get the battery from 0 to 36% in 10 minutes. Don’t like wired charging? The device has 50W wireless charging support, which can get the phone to a 100% in 55 minutes.

When it comes to storage and RAM, the base model has 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The mid-tier version comes with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Finally, the top-tier version comes with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.

Pricing and Availability

Currently, the Xiaomi Mix Fold 3 is available in the Chinese market. Pre-orders are currently open, and the official sales will begin on August 16. The starting price of the phone is CNY 8999, which is around $1240. And the mid-tier version costs CNY 9999, around $1377, while the top-tier model is CNY 1099, around $1515. Xiaomi will also release a special edition soon.

That said, Xiaomi did not mention global availability in the official launch event. And we did not see the Mix Fold 2 release in the global market either. So, there’s a slim chance of the Fold 3 getting out of the Chinese market. But we will get you updated if we learn more about the availability of the device.
