Google Pixel, while not a dominant player in the global smartphone arena, is steadily making its mark. With the recent launch of the Pixel 8 series, updated statistics indicate that Google has shipped approximately 40 million phones to date, marking a significant surge in the past year alone.

According to IDC VP Francisco Jeronimo, Google Pixel managed to ship 37.9 million phones between 2016 and 2023. Covering the entire lifespan of the Pixel series thus far. Jeronimo highlights that sales have been consistently growing in double digits in recent years.

While these numbers may not be in the same league as Apple. Because it ships over 224 million iPhones annually, Google is steadily climbing the ranks. In 2018, Jeronimo pointed out that Google doubled its shipments in the first year, reaching nearly four million units. By 2019, Google’s momentum picked up, with 7.2 million units sold that year alone.

In the previous year, Google was approaching the 30 million milestone, having sold 27.6 million units just before the Pixel 7 launch. Remarkably, this means that Google shipped around 10 million Pixel phones over the last 12 months. This marks a potential record-breaking year for Pixel, surpassing the previous best of 7.2 million units.

This achievement doesn’t come as a surprise, considering Google’s growing presence in the US and Japan over the past year. A Q2 report earlier this year highlighted Pixel’s upward trajectory while other Android competitors were sliding. Japan, in particular, has emerged as Google’s largest market for Pixel phones, with reports indicating that Pixel is gaining market share over the iPhone in Japan. Notably, Google was the sole smartphone brand in North America to avoid a year-over-year shipment decline.

In conclusion, it has been a gradual journey. But Google appears to be establishing a more secure footing in the competitive smartphone market. With consistently increasing sales figures and strategic gains in key markets, Google Pixel is proving that it’s a brand to watch.
