Apple Will Fix iPhone 18 Pro Face ID Reboot Bug Next Week

Apple is preparing a software update to fix a reboot bug affecting some iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max users. The problem can cause the phone to freeze and restart after a failed Face ID check.

Apple confirmed to 9to5Mac that the fix is in development and should arrive early next week. The company has not said which version of iOS 27 will include the fix.

The problem does not seem to happen when unlocking the iPhone from the lock screen. Instead, it can happen when Face ID is used inside an app.

For example, users have reported the problem when opening the Passwords app or private Safari tabs. It can also happen when Face ID is used for other protected actions.

If the first Face ID scan fails, tapping “Try Face ID Again” can cause the phone to freeze. The screen stops responding to touch, and the phone then restarts after a few seconds. 9to5Mac was able to reproduce the problem on a European iPhone 18 Pro.

The iPhone 18 Pro also has a new Face ID setup. Apple moved the infrared camera behind the display, which helped make the Dynamic Island smaller. However, Apple has not said that this hardware change is the cause of the reboot bug.

At least one user said Apple support suggested replacing their iPhone after experiencing the problem. 9to5Mac later said this appeared to be the wrong approach because Apple is now preparing a software fix.

The problem does not affect every iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max. The full size of the issue is still unclear, although 9to5Mac says it has seen reports from a number of users.

For now, affected users should wait for the upcoming software update. Apple has confirmed that a fix is on the way, so replacing the phone should not be necessary for this specific bug once the update is available.

There is also another iOS 27 reboot problem that can affect other iPhone models. That appears to be a separate issue, so not every iPhone reboot is related to the Face ID bug.
