The iPhone 18 hasn't launched yet. The iPhone 19 may not exist. And somehow there are already iPhone 20 renders circulating. YouTube channel fpt. published a video claiming to show what Apple's 20th anniversary iPhone could look like — and if even half of the rumoured features materialise, it would be the biggest iPhone redesign since the original iPhone X.

A concept video is not a leak. But the rumours feeding it have credible origins.

Why "iPhone 20" Instead of iPhone 19

Apple skipped the iPhone 9 in 2017 to launch the iPhone X — marking the tenth anniversary with a complete redesign. The iPhone 20 rumour follows the same logic. 2027 is the 20th anniversary of the original iPhone, announced by Steve Jobs in January 2007. Naming the anniversary model iPhone 20 would be the most deliberate callback Apple could make to that moment.

The Three Design Changes — What's Credible

The quad-curved display rumour has the most supply chain backing. Apple is reportedly working with Samsung on a custom OLED panel curving gently on all four edges — similar to what Huawei has done with the Mate 70 Air but more refined. The engineering challenge is maintaining consistent brightness across curved edges, where OLED output typically drops. Samsung and LG are both reportedly involved in solving that problem.

Under-display Face ID is the second change — and the most technically demanding. Apple's Face ID relies on a precise infrared dot projector and flood illuminator. Hiding that array under display pixels while maintaining sub-second unlock speeds and accurate depth mapping requires a display architecture that doesn't currently exist at commercial quality. Xiaomi's UDC technology shows the path is viable for cameras — Face ID is a harder problem.

Solid-state haptic buttons are the third change. Apple already tested this approach for the iPhone 15 before engineering challenges pushed it back. The concept is mature — replace mechanical buttons with touch-sensitive surfaces that use vibration feedback to simulate a click. No moving parts. Better water resistance. A cleaner chassis profile.

The Hardware Claims Are More Speculative

A 200MP main camera, Apple A21 chip on 2nm, and silicon-carbon battery all appear in the renders video — but these are extrapolations of current trends rather than sourced supply chain information. Two-nanometre Apple silicon is expected for 2027 based on TSMC's roadmap. Silicon-carbon batteries are already appearing in Android flagships in 2026. A 200MP sensor would represent a dramatic jump from Apple's current 48MP philosophy.

Whether Apple moves to 200MP or achieves equivalent results with larger pixels and better computational photography is an open question — and one that won't be answered until actual iPhone 20 supply chain leaks surface in 2026 or early 2027.

For now, the renders are an exercise in informed imagination. A compelling one.
