Waze just announced its biggest feature batch in months. Five updates are rolling out across Android and iOS, ranging from a dedicated mode for motorcycle riders to a Gemini-powered voice search that can find the cheapest fuel station near your destination. Here's everything that's changing.

Summary

  • Motorcycle mode: AI-powered routing built for two wheels — motorcycle-specific shortcuts, road restrictions, and hazard alerts for potholes, speed bumps, and narrow bridges. Rolling out in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, and the Philippines first.
  • Personalized navigation: Waze now learns your route preferences from past trips. Highway-preferring drivers see highway routes suggested first. Can be turned off in settings.
  • Less chatty mode: Fewer voice prompts, shorter alerts — still covers turns, lane guidance, and hazards. Rolling out globally.
  • Conversational Reporting expansion: You can now report map updates like road closures and outdated addresses using natural language, not just traffic incidents. Reports are reviewed by local editors before going live.
  • Gemini destination search: Tap the voice icon and ask for "a coffee shop that's open right now" or "parking near the stadium" — Waze shows results you can select by voice. Rolling out to beta users globally.

Motorcycle Mode: More Than Just a Different Icon

This is the one that's genuinely new. Waze has always been built around car navigation. Motorcycle mode changes the routing logic itself — not just the vehicle icon. The AI factors in motorcycle-specific shortcuts that cars can't legally take, road restrictions that apply only to two-wheelers, and hazard types that matter more on a motorcycle than in a car. Potholes, speed bumps, raised crosswalks, shoulder endings, and narrow bridges all trigger alerts. ETA calculations also change to reflect how differently motorcycles move through traffic compared to cars.
The rollout starts in seven countries where motorcycle commuting is high and road conditions vary significantly. A broader global expansion is planned, though no timeline has been specified.

Personalized Navigation and Less Chatty Mode

The personalization feature is subtle but useful. Waze has always known local traffic patterns — now it also learns your personal preferences from past trips. If you consistently skip route suggestions that involve surface streets and toll booths, it adjusts. The setting can be disabled entirely for anyone who prefers Waze to treat every trip fresh.
Less chatty mode is straightforward. It cuts the volume of voice prompts without removing the critical ones — you still hear about turns, lane guidance, and hazards. You just don't hear everything else.

Gemini Expands From Reporting Into Search

Conversational Reporting launched earlier this year for traffic incidents. It now extends to map updates — you can verbally report a road closure or flag an outdated address, and local map editors review the report before it's applied. The natural language interface handles the structuring.
Gemini destination search goes a step further. Instead of typing into a search box, you ask Waze a question. "Find me parking near my destination" or "show me the fuel station with the lowest price nearby" — Waze interprets the request and returns results you can navigate to with a voice command. This feature is currently in beta.
