HONOR S3 Is a Tiny E-Ink Reader That Snaps Onto Your Phone

HONOR has introduced a rather unusual gadget for people who like to read on the go. The HONOR Life S3 is a tiny E-Ink reader that can attach magnetically to the back of a compatible smartphone.

It weighs only 61g and is just 5.6mm thick, making it small enough to carry with your phone without adding much bulk. The S3 is priced at 399 yuan, around $60, in China.

The S3 has a 3.68-inch soft-light E-Ink display with a pixel density of 259 PPI. HONOR also uses a frosted glass surface to give the screen a more paper-like feel.

There are no physical buttons. Instead, the entire display works as a touch surface, with a simple tap used to turn pages. The soft-light design is also aimed at making long reading sessions easier on the eyes.

The tiny size is both its main attraction and its biggest question mark. A screen this small will not replace a normal Kindle-style reader, but that is not really the point. It is designed for short reading sessions when carrying another device makes little sense.

The most interesting part is the built-in magnetic system. The S3 can snap onto the back of a compatible phone, letting you carry the reader and smartphone together. HONOR says the design keeps the two devices almost flush, so the extra thickness should remain limited.

The idea is simple. You keep your phone for everything else, then use the E-Ink screen when you want to read.

Personally, I like this approach more than turning a phone into a dedicated reading device. You get a proper E-Ink panel without giving up access to your main smartphone.

HONOR claims up to 30 hours of continuous reading. With normal use, the S3 can last for around one week, while standby time can reach 20 days.

The reader runs a lightweight RTOS and supports common ebook formats, including EPUB, PDF, MOBI, DOC, DOCX and TXT.

Books can be transferred wirelessly through the HONOR Smart Space app. There is also a TF card slot with support for up to 1TB of storage.

The HONOR S3 is clearly not trying to compete with a full-size e-reader. At around $60, its appeal comes from the tiny size, low weight and magnetic design. For commuters or people who like reading a few pages during short breaks, it could be a clever solution.

The real question is whether a 3.68-inch screen is large enough for comfortable reading. I would definitely want to spend some time with one before calling it practical.

For now, though, HONOR has created something genuinely different. And that is becoming increasingly rare in the gadget market.
