Google's
Chromecast is a huge hit in the states, now
China's
Huawei wants in on the action. The
Mango Pie 2 TV Stick has been released by
Huawei and it instantly brings to mind Google's
TV dongle. The
Mango Pie 2, which is on sale for 299Yuan (49USD, 36EUR) on Jingdong and
other chinese technology sites, runs an unknown version of Android.
The
Mango Pie 2 includes an impressive looking
Bluetooth remote and integrates Hunan TV, Phoenix TV, CETV, SBS and others. It also has the technology to support local channels, as well as Hunan Satellite TV, Jiangsu TV, ZheJiang
TV and
CCTV.
Judging by the advertisement on
imgo.tv, the
Mango Pie 2 supports a Miracast like function that allows screen mirroring between your tablet and
TV. Like
Chromecast, the
Mango Pie 2 plugs directly into your TV's HDMI port. Although there does appear to be a way to use the
device's power cord to connect to the
TV via USB, it is unclear if this is used to draw power, display content on the
TV or for some other function. It is also unknown how "open" the
device is. If it can handle sideloading of non-proprietary Android apps and allows
Bluetooth devices other than the included remote to connect to it, it could be similar to the
OUYA or
Gamestick and pull double function as a game console.
Android-powered MicroPCs are not unknown in China, Baidu released its own Chromecast clone in September and the PPTV dongle was released back in August. Huawei's
device costs slightly more than its
competition's but also includes the
Bluetooth remote and appears to support a few more content providers.
