January Security Patch Arrives Essential Phone - Brings Fix For Meltdown and Spectre Vulnerability

The Essential Phone is running on stock Android thus updates are released pretty fast. We are only a few days in January, and the smartphone is already receiving the January Android security patch, just a couple of days after it was released by Google. This update packs a fix for the most recent vulnerabilities - Meltdown and Spectre which can affect both iOS and Android devices.

The notification for this update will arrive different units at different times. Please ensure that you are connected to a Wi-Fi signal and your battery should be fully charged (100%) before proceeding with the update. Meltdown and Spectre attack has one less target as the Essential Phone is currently receiving an update with build number NMJ88C which tackles the problem. This vulnerability can grant access to saved passwords in browsers amongst other things.

The Essential Phone comes with Snapdragon 835 processor coupled with 4GB of RAM and 128GB internal storage which is not expandable. At launch, this phone sold for $699 but after the initial issues, it took nosedive in price to about $499 for both Black and White versions and the phone will come unlocked, ready to work in any carrier of buyer’s choice.
